Preventing Illegal Dumping Through San Antonio's Free Landfill Day

San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department

If you have an old tire in your backyard, a sunken sofa in the living room, or cans of toxic stuff under your kitchen sink or garage, Saturday is the day to get rid of them.

San Antonio’s solid waste department has a free landfill day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at city collection centers and three privately operated facilities. Large items, including refrigerators and up to six tires from cars and small trucks or vans, can be dropped off at these locations.

Marcus Lee, a spokesman for the city’s waste department, said there is one common appliance that seems show up at city dumps more than others.

“What surprised me is the number of refrigerators that were just lined up,” he said.  “To me, that is that is the largest of large.”

What’s not allowed, however, are old cars or trucks, he said.

Locations and acceptable items:

Hazardous household items, including old paint cans, household cleaning chemicals, and drained motor oil can be dropped off at only one city location:

  • Culebra Road Bulky and Hazardous Household Waste Collection Center, at 7030 Culebra Road

Large piles of brush, such as tree limbs, can be taken to city locations at:

  • Bitters Brush Recycling Center, at 1800 Wurzbach Parkway
  • Nelson Gardens Brush Recycling Center, at 8963 Nelson Road

Or these private collection centers:

  • Republican Services Landfill, at 7000 I-10 East
  • Waste Management Landfill, at 8611 Covel Road

Bulky items, such as old appliances, can be taken to city locations at:

  • Bitters Bulky Waste Collection Center, at 1800 Wurzbach Parkway
  • Rigsby Avenue Bulky Waste Collection Center, at 2755 Rigsby Ave.
  • Frio City Road Bulky Waste Collection Center, AT 1531 Frio City Road
  • Southside Bulky Waste Collection Center, at 5450 Castroville Road
  • Culebra Road Bulky Waste and Hazardous Household Waste Collection Center, at 7030 Culebra Road

Or these private locations:

  • TDS Transfer Station, at 11601 Starcrest
  • Republican Services Landfill, at 7000 I-10 East
  • Waste Management Landfill, at 8611 Covel Road

Residents dropping off items must bring proof they live within San Antonio city limits. Proof of residency includes a recent CPS Energy bill, showing the solid waste service fee and a picture ID. No building contractors, or commercial industrial and hazardous waste will be accepted at this event.
Lee said private landfills participating with the city dumps will take just about any large bulky item or brush, but he would not take hazardous household waste to them.

  • 5450 Castroville Road
  • 7030 Culebra Road

Or these private locations:
