Schizophrenia is a complex, long-term illness with symptoms that can include hallucinations, delusions, cognitive issues and disorganized thinking.

Approximately 3.2 million Americans have this chronic disease, which interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others. Why is diagnosis difficult?

What causes schizophrenia and who is most at risk?

Symptoms usually start between the ages 16 and 30. What treatments and therapies are available?

Could stem cells repair the brains of people with schizophrenia? What other lines of research are in the works to improve the quality of life for people living with the disease?

Guests:

  • Jennifer Donegan, schizophrenia researcher and postdoctoral fellow at UT Health San Antonio
  • Marina Robertson, licensed professional counselor at UT Health San Antonio
  • Fonda White, mental health peer advocate from San Antonio
